New on Freading
New titles arrive on Freading weekly. Just a couple of the more notable authors to have works that were added to the site recently include
Arthur C. Clarke and Kurt Vonnegut.
Arthur C. Clarke wrote science fiction novels that were best sellers all over the world. According to the New York Times “Of his scores of books, some like “Childhood’s End,” have been in print continuously. His works have been translated into some 40 languages, and worldwide sales have been estimated at more than $25 million.” Also according to the Times, his visions for human beings in space was “acknowledged by American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts, by scientists like the astronomer Carl Sagan and by movie and television producers.”. One of his most famous releases entitled “2001: A Space Odyssey” became a Stanley Kubrick film that won 14 awards, including an Oscar.
Literary icon Kurt Vonnegut may be best known for his works such as “Breakfast of Champions”, “Slaughterhouse Five” and “Cat’s Cradle”. According to the Indiana Historical Society (the author’s native state) his experiences in the U.S. Army fighting in the Battle of The Bulge and his time as a prisoner of war helped form some of the subject matter he wrote about. Nielson Bookscan, which tracks about 70% of industry sales, states that “Slaughterhouse Five” has sold over 280,000 copies since 2006. The Today Show website states that figure “is more than four times the combined pace of six of the most talked about books in the past 60 years”. In comparing Vonnegut to another well known author, Norman Mailer, the Vice President of Merchandising at Barnes & Noble is quoted as saying “ Mailer’s books don’t have the same staying power (as Vonnegut)..people get hooked on Vonnegut and they stay with him…he is on our summer reading lists for students and we have adults saying –I’m going to read this again”
